The best Hanukkah gifts for kids are the ones that lead back to the Yom Tov: one idea for each of the eight nights that adds to the light rather than to the pile. This year Chanukah begins on a Friday night and ends on Shabbos, and that shapes what works on which night. Here is a gift for every night of Chanukah 2026, with the dates, the ages each one suits, and when to order so it is there in time.

When is Chanukah 2026, and when should I order gifts?

The first night of Chanukah is Friday evening, December 4, 2026, the night of 25 Kislev 5787. Because it is erev Shabbos, the licht that night are lit before the Shabbos candles. The eighth night is Friday, December 11, erev Shabbos again, and the last day, Zos Chanukah, is Shabbos, December 12.

So this year's Chanukah has two Shabbosos, and that changes the gift plan. A book is perfect for Shabbos. A toy that needs batteries or a screen waits for Motzei Shabbos, and anything to color or build belongs to a weekday night.

If you are ordering online, work backwards. Torah Tale's US standard shipping arrives in about 7 to 10 business days from the order, and Thanksgiving falls in the middle, so a book meant for the first night should be ordered by about Wednesday, November 18. A gift for a later night gives you a few more days.

Eight nights of Hanukkah gifts: one idea for each night

Giving each night a theme keeps eight nights of gifts from turning into eight nights of unwrapping. The children know what is coming, and the themes do some of the teaching for you.

  1. Night 1, Friday, December 4: a book for Shabbos. The first gift is opened before candle lighting and read on Shabbos. A personalized Chanukah book, with your child inside the story of the Yom Tov, is made for exactly this night.
  2. Night 2, Motzei Shabbos, December 5: Chanukah gelt and a dreidel. The oldest Chanukah gift there is. Shabbos is over, the coins can be counted, and the dreidel can spin until bedtime.
  3. Night 3, Sunday, December 6: something to build. A building set, a wooden puzzle, or a kit to make a model menorah for the shelf, not one for lighting. A Sunday afternoon is long enough to finish it.
  4. Night 4, Monday, December 7: a game for the whole family. One gift that brings everyone back to the table after the licht, so the night ends together rather than in separate rooms.
  5. Night 5, Tuesday, December 8: a tzedakah night. Give each child a pushka of their own and coins to fill it, and let them help decide where it goes. A child who gives on Chanukah learns that light is meant to be shared.
  6. Night 6, Wednesday, December 9: something to make. Coloring, drawing and crafts are for the weekday nights, and this one is the start of Rosh Chodesh Teves. A coloring book of their own story fits this night well.
  7. Night 7, Thursday, December 10: a gift from the children. Turn it around. Each child gives a sibling, a parent or a grandparent something they made or chose themselves.
  8. Night 8, Friday, December 11: another book for Shabbos. Zos Chanukah is Shabbos, so the last gift, like the first, should be something to read. A second story keeps the theme of light going, for example Sefer Zechariah's vision of the golden menorah from the Nevi'im collection.

On both Fridays, give the gift early enough that it is opened before Shabbos begins, and keep the evening for the licht, the Shabbos candles and the seudah.

What makes a Hanukkah gift meaningful for a child?

Chanukah is built on pirsumei nisa, making the miracle known. We light where people passing can see it. A gift that carries the story of the Yom Tov does the same inside the house: it gives a child the words to tell what happened and why we light.

A meaningful gift does three things. It belongs to the Yom Tov, so it is not something that could have been given any week of the year. It suits the child's age, so it gets used rather than shelved. And it lasts past the eighth night, so the light is still in the house in Teves.

That is the case for a book over another toy. A storybook gets read on Shabbos Chanukah, reread in the car, and brought back out next Kislev. Our guide to personalized Jewish gifts for kids covers the other simchos where the same thinking applies.

A personalized book works across the whole range because the format grows with the child. Up to eight children can appear in the same book, so siblings can share one story, one child for each night of Chanukah if your family is that size.

What is a personalized Torah Tale Chanukah book like?

Your child is the hero. Their name, and their likeness from one uploaded photo, appear on every page, illustrated in high-resolution 3D animated-film style, inside the story of Chanukah. If you want the story itself first, our Chanukah story for kids tells it the way it is taught at home and in school, with ways to explain it at every age.

Every book ends with a page of 10 questions about the story, mixing what happened with what it asks of the child. On Chanukah that page earns its place: the candles burn for a while, and the questions give the family something to talk about while they do.

The book comes in English, Hebrew or Yiddish, as a board book, softcover or hardcover. Parents and grandparents can be added with their photos and appear with the children on the closing family page, which makes it a natural gift from Bubby and Zaidy. Every book is written with careful rabbinical guidance and strict tznius, and reviewed by our team before it goes to print.

How do I order a Chanukah book in time?

Making the book takes about five minutes. You create a free account and answer a few short questions: each child's name, boy or girl, age and one photo, the story, your community, the language and the format. Chanukah is in the Holidays collection. Our step-by-step guide walks through it.

For the first night, order by about November 18 with US standard shipping. If you are later than that, plan the book for a later night, since the eighth night is not until December 11, or choose US express, which is faster once the book goes to print. Shipping to Eretz Yisrael and everywhere else is shown at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

What are good Hanukkah gifts for kids?

The best Chanukah gifts for children tie back to the Yom Tov: Chanukah gelt and a dreidel, a tzedakah box of their own, a family game for after the licht, and a book that tells the Chanukah story. A personalized storybook in which the child is the hero is the gift that is still read after the gelt is spent.

Do you give a gift on every night of Hanukkah?

There is no obligation to. Giving Chanukah gelt is a long-standing minhag, and many families add a small gift each night while others give one larger gift. If you do give one each night, a theme per night keeps the focus on the Yom Tov rather than on unwrapping.

When should I order Hanukkah gifts for 2026?

Chanukah 2026 starts on Friday evening, December 4. With US standard shipping of about 7 to 10 business days from the order, and Thanksgiving in between, order a Torah Tale book by about November 18 for the first night. A gift meant for a later night, up to the eighth night on December 11, leaves more time.

What is a good gift for the Friday nights of Chanukah?

A book. Both the first and the eighth nights of Chanukah 2026 are erev Shabbos, and reading is exactly right for Shabbos. Give the gift early enough to open it before Shabbos begins, and save battery toys and crafts for the weekday nights.

What is a good Hanukkah gift from grandparents?

A personalized Torah storybook is a natural grandparents' gift. Bubby and Zaidy can be added with their photos and appear with the grandchildren on the closing family page, and up to eight grandchildren who are siblings can share one book.
