Neviim

• Sefer Yehoshua - Crossing the Yarden - Forty years in the midbar are over. The kohanim carry the Aron into the Yarden, the river stops mid-flow, and a whole nation walks across into Eretz Yisrael on dry ground.
• Sefer Yehoshua - Walls of Yericho - Six days of walking silently around the walls, and on the seventh a shofar blast and a shout - and the walls of Yericho come down. Rachav and her family are kept safe, as promised.
• Sefer Yehoshua - The Sun Stands Still - In the middle of a battle Yehoshua asks for something no one had asked before: for the sun to stand still until the fighting is done. And it does.
• Sefer Shoftim - Devorah - Devorah judges Bnei Yisrael under a palm tree and sends Barak out against Sisera's iron chariots. When the victory comes, she sings one of the great shiros in Tanach.
• Sefer Shoftim - Shimshon - A nazir from birth with strength no one could explain - tearing a lion apart with his hands, carrying away the gates of Azah, and one last tefillah between two pillars.
• Sefer Shoftim - Gidon's Small Army - Gidon is threshing wheat in a winepress when he is told he will save Bnei Yisrael. His army is cut from thousands down to three hundred, so everyone knows Who won the battle.
• Sefer Shmuel - Birth of Shmuel - Chana davens at the Mishkan with her lips moving and no sound coming out. Her tefillah is answered, and the boy she is given, Shmuel, is brought back to serve there.
• Sefer Shmuel - Dovid & Golias - A giant in armour taunts the whole army, and a shepherd boy with a sling steps forward. Dovid comes in the name of Hashem, and one stone ends it.
• Sefer Shmuel - Dovid & Yonasan - A friendship that survives a jealous king - arrows shot as a coded warning, a promise kept between two people who love each other for nothing they can gain from it.
• Sefer Melachim - Shlomo's Wisdom - Offered anything, Shlomo asks for a listening heart. Two women claim the same baby, and the wisest king in the world settles it with a sword he never intends to use.
• Sefer Melachim - Eliyahu on Carmel - Eliyahu gathers everyone to Har HaCarmel for a test no one can argue with. The prophets of Baal call all day; Eliyahu davens once, fire falls, and the people cry out that Hashem is G-d.
• Sefer Melachim - Eliyahu's Chariot - Eliyahu and Elisha walk together to the Yarden, the water parts, and a chariot of fire carries Eliyahu up in a storm - leaving his mantle, and his work, to Elisha.
• Sefer Melachim - Elisha's Miracles - A widow's small jar of oil that fills every vessel she can borrow, bitter water made sweet, and a boy brought back to life - the quiet miracles of Elisha.
• Sefer Yeshayahu - Vision of Peace - Swords beaten into ploughshares, a wolf lying down with a lamb, and the whole earth full of the knowledge of Hashem. Yeshayahu's picture of the world as it will be.
• Sefer Yeshayahu - The Glowing Coal - Yeshayahu sees the Kisei HaKavod and says he is not worthy to speak. A malach touches his lips with a glowing coal, and he answers: here I am, send me.
• Sefer Yeshayahu - Chizkiyahu's Tefillah - Yerushalayim is surrounded and the king is told to surrender. Chizkiyahu spreads the letter out before Hashem and davens - and by morning the siege is broken.
• Sefer Yirmiyahu - The Navi's Call - Yirmiyahu says he is only a boy and cannot speak. He is told that he was known before he was formed, and that the words will be given to him.
• Sefer Yirmiyahu - The Potter's Clay - Yirmiyahu is sent to watch a potter at his wheel. A vessel goes wrong in his hands and he makes it again - and that is the whole message.
• Sefer Yirmiyahu - Saved from the Pit - Yirmiyahu is thrown into a muddy pit for telling the truth, and rescued by Eved-Melech with worn-out rags used as padding for the ropes - a small kindness remembered forever.
• Sefer Yechezkel - The Valley of Dry Bones - A valley full of dry bones, and a question: can these live again? Yechezkel prophesies, the bones come together, and a whole nation stands up - the picture of Klal Yisrael returning.
• Sefer Yechezkel - Two Sticks Become One - Two sticks with two names written on them, held together in one hand until they become one piece of wood. A promise that a divided people will be whole again.
• Sefer Yechezkel - The Watchman - A watchman on the wall who sees danger coming must blow the shofar. Yechezkel is told that speaking up is not optional when you can see what others cannot.
• Sefer Yonah - Yonah & the Big Fish - Sent to Nineveh, Yonah boards a ship going the other way. A storm, a big fish, three days in the dark - and a city that hears the warning and does teshuvah.
• Sefer Amos - The Shepherd Navi - Amos was not a navi or the son of one - he tended sheep and sycamore figs. Called anyway, he speaks about honest scales and caring for the poor.
• Sefer Zechariah - The Golden Menorah - Zechariah is shown a golden menorah fed by two olive trees, and told what it means: not by strength and not by power, but by My spirit.

Kesuvim

• Tehillim - Hashem Is My Shepherd - Hashem is my shepherd, I shall not want. The perek a Yiddishe child learns early and carries for life - green pastures, still waters, and walking through the valley unafraid.
• Tehillim - Praising Creation - The heavens tell of Hashem's glory and the sky declares His handiwork. A perek that teaches a child to look up and hear the whole world saying something.
• Tehillim - A Song of Thanks - Give thanks to Hashem for He is good - a song of hoda'ah, and the habit of noticing what you have been given before you ask for anything else.
• Sefer Mishlei - Wisdom - Shlomo HaMelech's advice to a child: fear of Hashem is the beginning of wisdom. Short, sharp lines about choosing good company and guarding your words.
• Sefer Mishlei - Learn from the Ant - Go to the ant, lazy one, and see her ways. No boss, no supervisor, and still she gathers her food in the summer - a lesson in doing what needs doing.
• Sefer Mishlei - Eishes Chayil - The song sung at the Shabbos table: a woman of valour whose worth is beyond pearls, whose hands are open to the poor, and whose children rise and praise her.
• Sefer Iyov - A Test of Emunah - Everything is taken from a good man - his wealth, his children, his health - and he still does not turn away. The hardest question in Tanach, asked honestly.
• Sefer Iyov - Iyov's Three Friends - Three friends come to sit with Iyov. For seven days they say nothing, which is the best thing they do; then they start explaining, and get it wrong.
• Sefer Iyov - Hashem Answers in the Storm - Hashem answers Iyov out of a whirlwind - not with reasons, but with questions. Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? And Iyov puts his hand to his mouth.
• Sefer Daniel - The Lion's Den - Daniel keeps davening at his open window even after it is made illegal. Thrown to the lions, he is found in the morning untouched - the mouths of the lions shut.
• Sefer Daniel - The Fiery Furnace - Chananya, Mishael and Azarya refuse to bow to a golden statue and are thrown into a furnace heated seven times over. They walk out with not even the smell of fire on them.
• Sefer Daniel - The Writing on the Wall - In the middle of a feast a hand appears and writes on the wall. No one can read it until Daniel is brought - and that same night the kingdom changes hands.
• Sefer Ezra - Return to Yerushalayim - After seventy years of galus, the road home. Ezra leads the return to Yerushalayim with the vessels of the Beis HaMikdash carried carefully in their hands.
• Sefer Ezra - Building the Second Beis HaMikdash - The foundation of the second Beis HaMikdash is laid. The young people cheer and the old people weep, remembering the first - and the two sounds cannot be told apart.
• Sefer Ezra - Ezra Teaches the Torah - Ezra stands on a wooden platform and reads the Torah aloud from morning until midday, and the Leviim explain it, and the whole nation listens and understands.
• Sefer Nechemia - Rebuilding the Walls - Nechemia hears Yerushalayim's walls are broken and cannot rest. He inspects them by night, rallies the families, and the whole city rebuilds - each household its own stretch.
• Sefer Nechemia - A Tefillah for Yerushalayim - Before he asks the king for anything, Nechemia fasts and davens for the city he has never seen. A lesson in where to turn first.
• Sefer Nechemia - Guarding Day and Night - The builders work with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other, and half stand guard while half build. The walls go up in fifty-two days.
• Sefer Divrei HaYamim - The Story of the Malchus - The story of the malchus told again from the beginning - the generations, the kings, and the thread running through them all the way to Dovid's house.
• Sefer Divrei HaYamim - Dovid Prepares the Mikdash - Dovid is told he will not build the Beis HaMikdash, and spends the rest of his life gathering the gold, the silver and the cedar so that Shlomo can.
• Sefer Divrei HaYamim - The Leviim Sing - The Leviim appointed to sing before the Aron day and night - a whole family given one job: to make sure the avodah is never silent.
• Megillas Esther - A Jewish girl becomes queen of Persia, a wicked adviser casts lots to destroy her people, and everything turns over. Hashem's name is never mentioned, and His hand is on every page.
• Megillas Rus - A Moabite widow refuses to leave her mother-in-law - your people are my people. She gathers barley in Boaz's field, and becomes the great-grandmother of Dovid HaMelech.
• Shir HaShirim - The song of songs, read as the love between Hashem and Klal Yisrael - gardens, spices, a voice calling at the door, and a longing that runs through the whole megillah.
• Koheles - Shlomo HaMelech tries everything under the sun - wealth, building, wisdom, pleasure - and comes back to one conclusion: fear Hashem and keep His mitzvos, that is the whole person.
• Megillas Eicha - The kinnos of a city left empty, read on Tisha B'Av by candlelight. It ends by asking Hashem to bring us back - renew our days as of old.
