What happens in Parshas Pekudei

Moshe Rabbeinu makes a careful count of all the gold, silver, and copper given for the Mishkan, so that everyone knows each gift was used honestly. The bigdei kehunah are finished, and every step is done just as Hashem commanded Moshe. The people bring all the finished parts to Moshe, and he blesses them.

Rashi tells us that the Mishkan was too heavy for anyone to stand up, so Moshe tried, and with Hashem's help it rose by itself. On Rosh Chodesh Nisan the Mishkan is raised, and a cloud covers the Ohel Moed while the glory of Hashem fills it. From then on, when the cloud lifted, Bnei Yisrael traveled, and when it rested, they camped. Sefer Shemos ends with Hashem dwelling among His people, and we say together: chazak chazak v'nischazek, be strong, be strong, and let us strengthen one another.

Lessons and middos for children

  • Honesty and trust

Moshe Rabbeinu counted every coin so no one would wonder. Being honest with what belongs to others builds trust.
  • Finishing what we start

Bnei Yisrael completed every part of the Mishkan. We can finish our jobs, even small ones, all the way to the end.
  • Siyata d'Shmaya

Moshe tried, and Hashem lifted the Mishkan. We do our part, and Hashem helps us with the rest.

Questions for the Shabbos table

  1. Why do you think Moshe counted every piece of gold and silver?
  2. How do you think it felt to see the cloud cover the Mishkan for the first time?
  3. What is something you started that you are proud you finished?
  4. What do we say when we finish a sefer of the Torah, and why?

How your child steps into the story

Your child stands with Bnei Yisrael as the Mishkan rises and the cloud of Hashem's glory settles over it. The story ends looking ahead to Sefer Vayikra, when Hashem will call to Moshe from inside the Ohel Moed.
