What happens in Parshas Beshalach

Moshe Rabbeinu takes the bones of Yosef along, as Yosef had asked, and Hashem leads the people with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. Paroh changes his mind and chases them to the sea. Chazal tell us that Nachshon ben Aminadav walked into the water first, and then Moshe raised his staff, the sea split into walls, and Bnei Yisrael crossed on dry land. On the far shore Moshe and the people sing Az Yashir, and Miriam leads the women with drums and dancing.

In the midbar Hashem feeds them with mann each morning, a double portion on Friday and none on Shabbos. Water flows from a rock, and when Amalek attacks, Moshe raises his hands while Aharon and Chur hold them up, and Yehoshua leads Bnei Yisrael to victory. Hashem commands us never to forget what Amalek did.

Lessons and middos for children

  • Emunah and courage

Nachshon stepped into the water before it split. When we trust Hashem, we can take the first step even when something feels scary.
  • Shiras hodaah

After the sea split, the whole nation sang to thank Hashem. We can thank Hashem with a song or a bracha when something good happens.
  • Kavod for Shabbos

The mann did not fall on Shabbos, so everyone prepared on Friday. We can help get ready for Shabbos so it is a special day.

Questions for the Shabbos table

  1. What do you think it looked and sounded like to walk between the walls of water?
  2. Why do you think Nachshon was brave enough to go in first?
  3. If you could taste the mann, what flavor would you wish for?
  4. Aharon and Chur held up Moshe's hands. How can we help someone who is tired?

How your child steps into the story

Your child walks between the walls of water beside Bnei Yisrael, then joins the song on the far shore and gathers mann on the first morning in the midbar. The story ends with the people journeying on toward a great mountain, where Yitro will bring the giving of the Torah.
